What Shin Soo Choo means to Korean People
Finally finishing a pretty decent home stretch the Angels are off on the road again (Tough loss to Detroit and their stellar Rick Porcello today). However looking back it was nice seeing a particular player our household seems to root for even when facing the Angels and that is Shin Soo “Choo Choo Train” Choo

I’ll be honest and say I’m not the kind of person who is in your face about Korean Pride or Asian pride (though I am actually very comfortable with who I am and where I come from. I love both cultures equally, though I was born here in the good ol U S of A
.) but Shin Soo Choo (second to Chan Ho Park of course) is one of the most respected people in the nation of South Korea for many reasons.
Being the only South Korean position player to stay in the US and have a successful career thus far, Shin Soo Choo surely is the pride and joy of the nation. At one time he was leading the AL in batting (.329) and on base percentage (.449) and among the leaders in home runs and base stealing. Talk about a 5 tool player! (Grady and Shin Soo have got it goin on!). And on top of all of that he has a cannon for an arm.
Quiet yet sociable, hard working yet knows how to have fun in a country he has been in for ten years now. I’m glad he’s starting to get some recognition from fans and MLB in general. It’s nice to see South Korean athletes shine because mostly all you hear are the Japanese players making a splash. (And quite a splash they have made! Ichiro, Matsui, Nomo, need I go on?
). I appreciate South Korean baseball which can be compared to the National League style of play. Emphasis on the fundamentals and sharp defense. Now that’s how you win ballgames!
Unfortunately Choo might have some issues with the law…. South Korean law that is, that requires all of its young men to go serve in the military for 2 years. (It certainly makes me appreciate our soldiers who serve voluntarily! Great sight to give your thanks here: CLICK ME) However I believe he can get an exemption of some kind. I hope he does. The Indians aren’t doing very well at all unfortunately. They were such a great team few years back.
There are some things I hate whenever Shin Soo comes to town though……..
1. Bona Fide Angel Killer: He crushes us. Hard. From both sides of the plate. It’s very depressing
2. Family turns against Angels: Whenever he or Chan Ho Park comes to town the family jumps ship to root for them respectively. I have too much love for the Angels to do that! Although I do admit sometimes with the players I really like, I wish they themselves have a good game while the Angels win. Win win situation yes?
So show in conclusion, show him some love! Vote for him for the all star game which is at the Big A this year! Angel fans are so excited! I’m so excited! (prepare for the biggest all star game rant in the history of the game! Coming Soon to a blog post near YOU! All my thoughts and feelings about the voting process for the all star games soon to come)
Here’s to a good season for Mr Choo! (well & Grady too..and the Indians) Although… since when did ya hire Scott Boras? I went on this whole “I hate scott boras” rant on my mother who isn’t as much of a fan of baseball as my grandparents and brother.. She replied with a trite “well he’s doing his job you should be mad at the owners for accepting such money” and that was that. Which is completely true but I still dislike him. There’s something about him i don’t like. Can anyone pinpoint it out? I’ve never gone along with the business side of sports……
In other news:
Best of luck to Bob Uecker! What a spirit behind that voice! He has a lot of supporters and though I am not a part of the Brew Crew family I am included. Hoping for a great recovery!
AL West is looking a lot like I thought it would be. It’s pretty close thus far
Immigration bill & baseball go together like blow drying your hair in the bathtub. People are boycotting outside of Chase Field, Players Association completely disagrees with the bill, we’re protesting to not have the all star game in AZ for 2011, etc etc! It’s gone mad! Arizona what have you done? I’m going to try and not be political here but I’ve done a lot of thinking about people working hard towards a dream they had all their lives. We all have dreams and we don’t all come from similar backgrounds. We are taught to do whatever it takes. Sometimes that requires you to leave your comfort zone (aka your home) for something new, exciting and possibly dangerous in a foreign place. I think everyone deserves a pursuit of happiness.
The Mets are on a roll…. I thought they were unhappy with their manager?
NBA playoffs are a doozy! I am not a Laker fan. I live in Los Angeles. In fact I don’t have a favorite team though I have many favorite players. Predictions? I think it’s going to be Magic and the Cavs… with Magic winning it despite the whole drama with Dwight and the fouling… I think OKC Thunder deserve a lot of love for what they have accomplished this year. Such a young team with a lot of energy! (I love young teams!) They’ll be great in years to come!
Well that’s all folks! I’m under a lot of stress because it is AP testing week(s)! Oh joy
. So I’m studying studying studying watching the angels studying studying getting distracted while studying studying. A student’s life is very chaotic :O. It’s the end of the year push and I’m going out there to make some clutch hits~! I’ll see you once everything’s over with. If I don’t make it out alive at least you all are such great candidates to write me a moving eulogy
Honestly though I’m willing to work hard! Off I go!
wish me luck on these exams!

p.s. Today was National No Phone Zone day! 5,000 people die each year because of distracted drivers (whether they were texting while driving or calling while driving or just reaching for their pho
ne while driving). Please sign the pledge to make your car a No Phone Zone. This is becoming a seriously dangerous habit. No one should die from this because much like drunk driving this is all preventable!
