Ay yai yai!

Hello blog-o-sphere! Haven’t blogged in awhile so this is going to be a long one filled with random news about baseball in general because it has been a crazy couple of weeks!

How is the AL West as of right now? Well, it is the following:
Oakland Athletics (9-4) (A’s are looking good! Must be all that young talent!)
Seattle Mariners (6-6) (i’m sure they’re going to improve too good of a team not to)
Texas Rangers (5-6) (Giving it up for CJ Wilson! Doing well as a starter!)
LA Angels (5-7) (showing promise but room for improvement! :D )
Sigh… let me say that it is only the first two weeks and the great thing about baseball is that you never know but there are certain things that are glaring red as of right now. Some of them include:
1. A streaky offense: We have a good lineup but it’s not consistent. I’m hoping more guys do better as time goes on. Nothing wrong with late bloomers as long as they do bloom :)
2. Shaky bullpen: Our pen is not as strong as it could be. Scot Shields is back, Brian Fuentes is on the DL and even though we do have Fernando Rodney it’s not enough. Hopefully this gets better as the season carries on.
3. Third base: I’m missing Figgy. BIG time. You Mariners fans better be appreciating him lol. He’s a stellar third baseman for sure! Brandon Wood is still young and I’m not saying he doesn’t have talent but when you’ve had a stable third baseman for so long you can’t help but be a little bit critical. However I know that Maicer Izturis (IZZY! I love this guy!) can platoon along with Wood on third. I’m not giving up on our rookie yet!
Back to the positivity:
1. Rotation: Our starters are doing okay. I have confidence in Jered Weaver, as our new ace,to lead the way, Joe Saunders to follow through and Ervin Santana to stay consistent with that great stuff. Scott Kazmir is off the DL and hopefully he has a better season. I certainly have confidence in him! Joel Pinero is doing well. I didn’t know enough about him to be sad/happy about having him in our club not now I am more appreciative.
2. Jeff Mathis: I will say this. Last year was Mike Napoli‘s year and this year is Jeff Mathis‘ year! The better defender of the two is also doing well at the plate! I’m proud of him. He had a stunning postseason (very surprising!) and hopefully he shines more this season too.
3. Matsui-San: Did y’all see his welcome at the Opening Day game in New York? That was pretty classy and sweet. I heard Derek Jeter gave him a fake ring the first time. Ahh silly Jeter ;) . Despite the tough (VERY TOUGH) series I was glad for him. He’s doing really well for us. I didn’t know how he’d do for us but we really love him out here in LA.
AL West is going to be competitive I can feel it! I really can! Oakland is going strong so far and I know Seattle is just coming up. Cliff Lee isn’t even in the rotation yet! (Yikes!). Angels are slowly improving and they have a lot of fight in them.
As for other baseball news….
1. Angels marked one year anniversary of Nick Adenhart‘s death: I truly loved how the way our organization handled the situation especially in keeping his memory alive. I’m sure his family is appreciative too. They founded the Nick Adenhart Award and it is given to the best starting pitcher of the each season. Last year went to Jered Weaver. Very fitting because those two were very close and were about to move in together. Here’s a very touching article from ESPN’s Amy Nelson on the events leading to Nick Adenhart’s death. And another moving article from ESPN’s Eric Neel on the days after his death
2. Happy Jackie Robinson Day!: A life is not important except in the impact it has on other lives.”  This couldn’t be more true. I wonder if he knows the kind of impact he left on so many people. I admire his strength, his courage, his grace and the way he played baseball. Very driven and a very talented athlete! I love how his family is continuing his legacy by giving back with their thriving foundation :)

She still does!
3. UBALDO JIMENEZ! UBALDO JIMENEZ! UBALDO JIMENEZ!: Please excuse the excitement. I am certainly a fan of Ubaldo JImenez! If you don’t know by now, 26 year old Ubaldo Jimenez threw the first no hitter in Colorado Rockies history against the Atlanta Braves. Not to mention there was a great play by Dexter Fowler out there in center field that saved it!  I’m very proud of him! (everybody was!) He’s young and has a Cy Young in his future! I (and Miguel Olivo) call it! In fact Miguel Olivo is quite the prophet! What I like about him is that he’s humble, gracious and never really strived for attention. He’s a great pitcher and I’m glad he got to experience this lovely achievement. And to think he didn’t want to be a baseball player…..

4. Mets v Cardinals: W-O-W! I love baseball! What a showdown between these two teams! Mets and Cardinals played 20 innings (aka 6 hours and 53 minutes) of baseball! The Mets won on a sac fly by Jose Reyes. Some fun facts from one of my favorite blogs that I reference very much on mine, Big League Stew and fellow mlb blogger Anthony DiComo:

>>It began with 18 scoreless innings
>>The Cards called on two position players Feliz Lopez and Joe Mather to pitch the final three innings. Lopez went scoreless 18th, throwing 12 of 21 pitches for strikes in his first career mound appearance. He switched positions three times (also playing third and shortstop)
>>Mather took the loss, becoming the first Cardinals position player since Jose Oquendo (who’s now a Cards coach) in 1988 to render a decision. Mather also played third and center field.
>>Meanwhile, Kyle Lohse played the final three innings in left field after making 276 appearances as a pitcher. He made two putouts.
>>Mets closer Frankie Rodriguez estimates he warmed up about 10 times and threw 100 pitches in the bullpen before he came into the game in the 19th.
>>Jose Reyes went 0-for-7 but had the go-ahead RBI on a sacrifice fly in the 20th.
>>Jonathan Niese struck out as a pinch hitter and right-hander John Maine pinch ran. Mike Pelfrey usually a starter, got the save
>>New York used 24 of the 25 players on its roster — only Oliver Perez was left out.
>>Yadier Molina went 3-for-9 and caught every inning for the Cards.
>> Both teams combined for 19 walks, 35 strikeouts and 35 runners left on base.

It’s been a crazy couple of weeks everyone! There’s no game like baseball so I hope you all enjoy the rest of season!
