I’m not down with the off season moves…so far

What’s Happening MLBlogs fam?

Welcome to Mimi’s SECOND blog post! Holllah~ party.jpg
All righty then off we go!

Okay so this afternoon I learn that Darren Oliver (aka the only reliable person in the bullpen for the past year) has moved on to sign a one year deal with the Texas Rangers. What’s with us and letting our free agents loose to rival teams? Not cool.

I’m not hating on division rivals I actually enjoy friendly competition (in fact I consider the entire west side as family because we rarely get attention compared to the east but this is for another post) but not when you’re at the bottom of the food chain in regards to offseason action.

So far it has been…

1. Chone “Figgy” Figgins to the Seattle Mariners
I’ll be honest with you and say I was heartbroken. He is a family favorite and I couldn’t believe the fact that he left us. More importantly I didn’t even know who the replacement was going to be. Brandon Wood is most likely to fill in for third and if that is so then I’m quite disappointed. Okay Okay calm down angel fans reading this! Before you kill me hear me out. I have yet to see him prove himself and if he does then I shall happily eat crow. The thing about Figgy I’m going to miss the most? Probably his smile. He always had fun and always interacted with fans. Not to mention he is versatile, has speed and his D at the hot corner is definitely underrated. And his work ethic? Now you don’t want me to go on and on about that now do you? ;) He’s not your typical third baseman but who cares? He has all the talent in the world. Definitely will be missed! Hope Mariner fans treat him well :)

2. Lackey to the Red Sox

This one really threw me off. I was quite confused and sad at the same time. Lackey, the Angels ace for many years signed a 5 year $82.5 million dollar deal with our East Coast rival the Red Sox. At first all I felt was betrayal then after my head cleared up a bit I decided that it was much better to root for players who leave your team and thank them for their service(?) than hating on them. I don’t think the Angels were looking to pay that much for him nor that long. However I’m still upset because he always had a bulldog mentality when he pitched. Very emotional very passionate. Some say it can be distracting I think its more beneficial than anything esp. when half the team is very reserved :) . He was a vocal leader and his presence shall be missed. However what was with the whole “I always wanted to be a part of this [Boston Red Sox] team” comment there John?

3. Irashaimase Matsui Sayounara Guerrero!

Without understanding any of his previous stats and the wonderful-ness of his WS MVP performance I found out about the news and went “Now we let go of Vladdy too!!!!”. Yes folks our bad ball slugger is now a free agent. I always thought of him as the face of the Angels and not seeing him around is gonna be sad indeed. I know he gets a lot of heat especially from Angel fans about his approach but he’s had a brilliant career so far and deserves respect. As for Matsui I could only go into a comparison of him and Vladdy. I felt they were both in the decline of their careers and the Angels were merely making a switch. However he is a great fit even though its gonna take time to get used to. So I welcome him from the Evil Empire :) p.s. I also thought of Mike Napoli who shares the catching position with Jeff Mathis and how he sometimes hits DH.. I wonder if Matsui is content with sharing…

4. Darren Oliver to Texas Rangers

Finally the “cooooooool as a cucumber” lefty veteran Darren Oliver has left us and gone to the Texas Rangers. I admired him because not only was he always reliable he never lost his composure. He was a great presence in the reasonably young bullpen and was remarkable in the postseason. Now our bullpen is in shambles and here’s to a well recovered Scot Shields! I wish Oliver the best of luck on the team he started with except when he’s facing us.

(Its an older picture but he still looks the same to me :P )

Although I don’t make predictions it looks like Seattle would be division champion next year… if we went by paper. However 1. the offseason is far from over 2. The 2010 season hasn’t even begun to begin! :D So with hopeful thoughts and nostalgic memories I bid thee farewell! I wish Figgins, Lackey, Vladdy and Oliver the best of luck! Its quite sad because 3 out of the 4 have been a part of the Angels system since the first year I was a fan! 2 out of the 4 was a part of that magical year of 2002. Ex-Angels usually end up okay anyways :)

Questions:  Who should be the next Angels’ Ace? Are you happy with your team’s off season moves so far? Who should the Angels go after next? Feel free to respond!

Till next time y’all! Thank you once again for reading and please leave a comment about your opinions and advice on how I can make this Underneath the Halo blog better for your enjoyment
