If you can’t beat ‘em, pray they faint of heat exhaustion

The second half has begun! Hopefully everyone is doing well! If not, then things will get better just keep holding on :)

However, Southern California also has its downside
When it’s hot… holy mother of cupcakes it is HOT
hot.jpg
And right now. It is HOT! I’m just sitting doing nothing and I’m sweating bullets. It’s horrible. In fact it’s been the hottest summer on record! This concerns me beyond belief and I can only imagine what the players are going through. Hopefully the crew takes care of them with fans and spray bottles :)
I do think that heat can affect players especially when there is a long inning down the stretch.  Certain areas are certainly hotter than others like…. Texas

texas2.gif
Grrrrr Texas!!!

I have never seen a Texas Rangers team like this before. They are beyond amazing right now and surprisingly very under-the-radar. Their offense is as strong as it has always been. With the combination of Vladimir Guerrero (who’s having one of the best year’s in his very impressive career) and Josh Hamilton along with the very consistent Michael Young and Ian Kinsler? Tough to beat. Their starting pitching is consistent too which is just a pain. CJ Wilson has been doing well as a first time starter and they just seem to be rolling along. I hate to admit this but I think they are an overall stronger team than the Angels are. It does seem like the Angels are playing catch-up
However I am not giving up on the Angels because they are just full of surprises. There is that trade deadline that’s coming up so you never know what the front office has in store.
I think that is what makes the second half so intensely serious. The first half is usually fun but the second half is what makes you or breaks you. People haven’t been taking the Rangers as serious contenders because they think they will fade away from the Texas heat much like other years. I’m not sure if this is a team that would fade away. Like I said it is very different from other Rangers teams in previous years. So, highly unlikely. (Though I wouldn’t mind if that happened.) I just hope the Angels don’t slow down because of the heat. That is a concern especially those dog days of August. Those just kill you!
As of now the Angels are 4.5 games behind the Rangers. This upcoming series has me worried beyond belief! We need to win the series against the *gulp* Bombers and the next one against the Rangers for us to stay in reach of first. As of right now the offense hasn’t been helping our starting pitching. It seems to be waking up but not enough power :( Today Scott Kazmir (our worst pitcher in the rotation) went on the DL with shoulder fatigue. Whether it’s for the worse or for the better I have no idea really.
What am I expecting from the trade deadline? Hopefully a player to help our ailing bullpen. Teams with a weak ‘pen don’t go anywhere! The Angels are known for not making any big moves which sometimes bugs me because if you can’t take risks then you can’t make it to postseason either. I’m still confident in Tony Reagins and the front office to get things done. We do have a pretty good farm system :D
I’m completely floored at how competitive ALL the divisions are this year. Anything can happen and when in sports can you say that the most? Baseball! *ding ding ding* If Bengie Molina can hit a stand up triple, Roy Halladay can give up 6 runs or more, Matt Latos can go on the DL for sneezing and Jhonny Peralta can hit an inside-the-park home run then why can’t the Angels overtake the Rangers? I love the unpredictability that sports can bring. Especially baseball! I’m excited to see what second half has in store for all of us.
Sure the Angels have a lot to improve on but I’m still proud of the effort they showed thus far. Time to step it up! Texas Rangers, BRING IT!

Favorite moments from the 81st ASG!

Hello! I hope you all enjoyed the great All Star Game and its festivities. To those who went I hope it was a great memory. I personally enjoyed it very much! The game itself was amazing as well (we’ll get to more of that later!).

As I said in my previous blog post I truly love the All Star Game and what it represents. So without further ado, I would like to share some of my favorite moments and my recap of these past few days!
1. Big Papi goes DEEP!

HRD.jpg
Congrats to Big Papi for winning the HR Derby! Corey Hart led the first round with 13 but at the end it was up to Hanley Ramirez and David Ortiz. It was fun to see them battle it out and to see the players having fun :)
2. Favorite moment #1: All Star Parade
DL.jpg
The All Star red carpet parade is one of my favorite events! It’s nice to see the players all dressed up and enjoying things with their families. It’s a sight to see :) The All Star parade was held in Disneyland which made things that much better!
3. Moment of Silence for George Steinbrenner
GS.jpg
The sudden death of George Steinbrenner left us all in shock but baseball came together to remember his accomplishments and the impact he had on the game last night. May he rest in peace. Compliments to BLS for the picture.
4. Favorite Moment #2: All Star introductions
ASG intro.jpg
Another one of my favorites! The All star introductions are incredible! It’s nice to see the players with such proud looks on their faces. They all looked so happy and honored to be there! They are all deserving of it too. I especially loved Vladdy’s ovation and Jered Weaver and Torii Hunter. Home crowd treated them well! **Sorry for all the boos Yankee and Red Sox fans.. but uhm look on the bright side the players got a kick out of it! Especially A-rod ROFL!!
arod.jpg
5. Favorite Moment #3: Ubaldo Jimenez and David Price

ASG2.jpg
Two of my favorite young pitchers! They did a tremendous job! I truly believe this year is the “Year of the Pitcher.” I was blown away by the pitching performances last night. Really magnificent! Congratulations to both pitchers for their first all star selections and for starting us off the right way!

6. Favorite Moment #4: Marlon Byrd’s head’s up play

d'oh!.jpg
7. Congrats NL!!!!
NL party.jpg
Gotta gives props to the Senior Circuit! They stepped up and shut the AL down! Their pitching was incredible and so was AL. Very impressive stuff it blew my mind and kept me very happy! I swear I saw 99 mph on almost every pitch! From David Price‘s 98 mph fastball to Jonathan Broxton‘s 99 mph pitch to get Ian Kinsler on the pop up. You could say there were some… managerial mishaps by Joe Girardi but in the end the NL reigned supreme. It’s been 14 long years NL, congratulations!
8. Favorite Moment #5: EPIC hip bump!
hipbump~.jpg
Hip Bumps are my favorite type of celebrations. I know there is a threat of injury but still it’s highly entertaining :)
9. Brian McCann MVP!

MVP.jpg
That bases clearing double gave NL all it needed to win their first ASG in 14 years! MVP worthy indeed :)
Honorable Mentions:
~Rod Carew’s  first pitch strike to Torii Hunter
~ Heath Bell‘s 3-D glasses
~Scott Rolen going 1st to 3rd
~MLB Network’s ASG coverage
~Brian Wilson‘s fashionable mohawk and accompanying bright orange nikes

It’s amazing to me how fast the first half went by! Four no hitters and some surprising teams are in first place! Lucky for us there’s still a lot of baseball to be played. In fact the divisions are all competitive! Let the second half be as crazy as the first!

The Big A welcomes you to the 81st All Star Game!

Ahh people are complaining, pointing fingers and reminding each other of how poor of a commissioner Mr Bud Selig truly is. This must mean only one thing…

2010-All-Star-Logo-Anaheim2.jpg
All Star Game time!
Sure it’s a week early but I can’t help myself. I can’t wait!
Before I continue, I just have to say how proud I really am to have the Big A host this year’s All Star Game. It’s truly an honor and a thrill as well! I’m very excited to invite everyone into what I consider my second home. The crew and the organization have been working endlessly to make improvements to the stadium. Anything to make one’s all star experience that much better. Everyone is excited!
The All Star game is meaningful in many ways because it has so much history tied into it. In fact 80 years of history. I’m watching ESPN’s Always All Star show as I’m typing this and getting informed (by Angel’s own four time all star Torii Hunter as host) on great all star and home run derby moments from the past. It’s amazing to watch clips of Babe Ruth, Al Kaline, Roberto Clemente, etc. I don’t know any other sport that honestly cherishes its tradition and former players as much as baseball does. All Star games in the past consisted of the nation’s best players and it was probably a sight to see. Even the Home Run Derby puts on a show each and every year! Bobby Abreu? Josh Hamilton? Ken Griffey Jr? Vladimir Guerrero? It goes on and on!
2007_home_run_derby2.jpg
Not only is the ASG a place where the nation’s best come to play on one field it is also a fierce rivalry between the two leagues. Though lately, AL has been dominating you never really know who’s going to win the game for sure. NL is very talented this year as well. I love the AL v NL rivalry which is probably why I do enjoy Interleague play.
ASG is something I look forward to each year but lately it seems as if people are losing interest which is so unfortunate. The ratings haven’t been pretty high which puzzles me. I also think the selection of players upsets people year after year because you usually find a lot of the same players going in every year despite their stats resulting in many snubs. Speaking of snubs….. there are a lot of players that were snubbed this year which baffled me beyond belief.
Jered Weaver deserved to be an All star and for him to be snubbed twice in a row upsets me. Especially as an Angel fan and as someone who saw him grow as a rookie to the ace that he is now. Although I now understand that he is ineligible to pitch because he is scheduled to pitch the preceding Sunday. That is a new rule that was added this year which also puzzles me. I don’t think a person should be denied just because he happened to pitch the day preceding the all star game. In fact CC Sabathia is pitching prior to the All Star game and he got chosen despite the fact that he was going to be replaced? That confuses me…. **WHOH ladies and gents! I just got info that Jered Weaver may possibly be an all star! Joe Girardi chose Jered Weaver to replace CC Sabathia! BUT Jered can’t pitch because he is pitching prior to the all star game. So Girardi would have to choose another pitcher to replace him?**
Anyways, the Padres’ pitching is what is keeping them alive and strong and for them to get snubbed is completely ridiculous. Same with Paul Konerko (who will probably lose to the leading Youkilis or Swisher depending on what is going on as of right now with the Final vote) and Jayson Werth and Brennen Boesch. And the list goes on and on and on. Maybe the rosters have something to do with the fact that all teams must be represented? Maybe it has to do with the fact that managers must make strategical moves to actually win the game, which could explain why Mr. Charlie Manuel chose Omar Infante, a utility player of the Braves. I’m still confused. Omar Infante is pretty confused himself probably! When he got a call, he thought he was going to be traded! Imagine wondering if you’re going to be traded to finding out you’re going to Anaheim!
It angers me to see so many deserving players not enjoy the All Star festivities they worked hard for. Being an All Star is not only an honor but it’s also national recognition. I know players act like it doesn’t bother them but I’m sure it does. We are all human beings. We all have feelings.
Perhaps maybe there needs to be a change. I understand the argument that the fans choose who the fans want to see regardless of ones’ stats but I feel one’s stats is worth looking at when deciding who to choose. It doesn’t take that much time to actually see who deserves a spot or how well one person is doing compared to another. One shouldn’t be denied a spot just because he isn’t as popular as the next guy. You can only control so many things and I understand that as well.
Maybe it’s what makes the ASG what it is. The complaints and the debates about who should have made it and who shouldn’t have. It’s just an observation and my opinion about the all star game that I’ve wanted to say for quite a long time. I’m quite open to change if it is for the better.
With that said, I offer my congratulations to this year’s all stars! Especially to the first year all stars! I’m SUPER excited to see David Price and Ubaldo JImenez (starters anyone?) for they are two of my favorite young pitchers! All star for the first time must be an absolute thrill!
I continue to enjoy the all star festivities! It’s exciting and you never know what may happen. I just wish I could go :( It’s disappointing to have it be held so close and to not go.&nbsp
;
I hope you all enjoy it as well! A lot of Angel fans are proud to host the ASG for the 3rd time. It’s going to be a good one. I can feel it! One for the history books!
~mimi
p.s. OH MY! Did you all see the Mickey Mouse statues?!?! Those things are incredibly cute i love em! What a creative way to celebrate the all star game! Here’s the Angels’ Mickey!

An Open Fan Letter

Dedicated To: Sweetie (aka Ervin Santana… why yes my nickname for Ervin Santana is “Sweetie“. He has a baby face. He’s adorable. My grandma and I adore his lovely pearly whites and well mannered personality. Family Favorite!) and all starting pitchers everywhere that have to deal with the following tragic events every now and then.

Dear Angels Offense (and hitters everywhere, wherever you may be),
It has been brought to my attention that lately, you have all been slumping. Instead of pointing fingers, it is easier to just put all my concerns in this letter that you will probably (i hope you never) never read.
Perhaps we are unaware of the circumstances that this club is in now that the all star break is soon upon us. As of right now we’re 4.5 games behind the Texas Rangers who just happen to be on this incredible winning streak since the beginning of the season I’m sure. I’m quite positive that you all can’t lose valuable games to something so ridiculous as an extreme lack of run support
Sure my bias shows through. And what if I do have more love towards the pitchers on the team than the rest of you? (with the exception of our two should-be-or-i’ll-start-a-riot all stars and the family favorite. You know who you are...) That does not mean you should just forget the discipline that Bobby Abreu has so effortlessly taught you and swing at first pitch strikes or balls way outside the strike zone. It leaves me with my jaw hanging open, confused and angry. You’re not even leaving guys on base– there are no guys on base to complain about how many guys you left on base! That is such a travesty. I am left speechless.
To be specific, let’s analyze these past few games against the team that always kick our rear ends no matter how high or low either teams are in the standings… the Kansas City Royals! Last night was a perfect example of how not to do your job. In fact, Joe Saunders pitched 8.5 innings without giving up a single run or in other words… it was 0-0 until the 9th. The game ended 2-1 Angels loss in the 10th.
Newsflash: Pitchers don’t like it when the other 9 players on the team don’t give any run support whatsoever. It’s a lonely feeling. One is the loneliest number. How would you like to be David and face nine Goliaths?
Now I have noticed that there is a certain pitcher in this club that you tend to bring this travesty upon quite more than anyone else…
What do you have against Ervin Santana
sweetie.jpg
Is it the fact that his first name is actually Johan and not Ervin? You can’t blame him for the name change.. it’s purely his choice. There is already a Johan Santana in the Major Leagues, imagine what would have happened if he didn’t change it. That would have been very confusing for all of us. Ervin looks like an Ervin. That’s a beautiful name.
Is it the fact that he is a family favorite? Please don’t get jealous. We love you all equally…. no we’re lying we all like you very much but we have family favorites. Like I said you know who you are. I’m sorry it’s just the way it is. What can I possibly do to change that?
Is it because his nickname is “Sweetie”? If that’s the case then that’s not fair. You all have nicknames. They are all formed from our hearts and are used as words of affection/endearment.
Ervin Santana has the best stuff in the starting staff and you all know it. It’s electric. When he is on the mound and Jeff Mathis is 60 ft away he dominates like no other. Most Likely to Get a No-No award goes to Ervin “Magic” Santana. Apparently, Most Likely to be Left Stranded By the Offense Award goes to Ervin as well.
Ahh speaking of no-no’s…. let’s take a look back at tonight’s game shall we? On this beautiful Fourth of July weekend, Sweetie went 8.5 innings, gave up 2 hits and 4 walks to only end up with a big fat L to his record.
Why is that?
Maybe it’s because the offense didn’t get to chat with Billy Butler until the 7th inning!!! That is right! You were thiiis close to being on the wrong end of a perfect game! That is not only embarrassing it is a big no-no. Watching Ervin leave the 9th and eventually lose the game was heartbreaking because he did the best he could have done. Any better and it would have been a no-no showdown! Not to mention Billy Butler almost beat him up for plunking him twice. We all know Ervin would never do such a thing on purpose. I can’t imagine him in a fight. He was truly alone tonight. I would not be so angry if this happened every once in a while but it happens to him quite often. Maybe it’s bad luck. Maybe it’s the lineup that Sosh writes up. Who knows? I, for one, am tired of watching a great start go to waste. This must be what Zack Greinke feels like every 5 days!
zack-greinke.jpg
Sometimes I feel as if the phrase “when it rains, it pours” really applies to this club because nothing ever seems to go perfectly right. Not only is the offense horrendous the bullpen isn’t helping either. Joakim Soria (I’ll have you know that he is one of my favorite closers in the game) is better than our entire bullpen. He shut us out two nights in a row! Friday night’s game went into extra innings and Brian Fuentes nor Scot Shields could hold it. Tonight’s game, Francisco Rodriguez couldn’t handle it either. It really is starting to worry me. Having enough confidence to know that there will be support for a pitcher is crucial to the Angels’ success. We all know it’s true.
Look, I know you are all trying. And maybe I’m not giving the Royals enough credit. They are tough every time we face
them
. Bruce Chen was amazing tonight and so was Joakim Soria. I just feel like the offense, pen and Scott Kazmir need to step up to catch up to the Rangers because it’s crucial that the Angels do! Oh yeah and get a first baseman while you’re at it…
Tomorrow on our nation’s birth, Joel Pinero is looking for his sixth straight win and I’m expecting it. I do not want tomorrow’s game to end with Hideki Matsui striking out like it has been these past two nights (It’s like deja vu!). Redeem yourselves and I shall take almost everything in this letter back. I hope you have given your heartfelt apologies to Joe Saunders for literally taking on the Royals team all by himself. I hope you gave Ervin Santana your heartfelt apologies for stranding him in so many games and for carrying you all to the finish line. For a lanky fellow like him to carry an entire load on his back must have left him beat. You better have bought him a drink.
So hitters everywhere– whether it be Major Leagues, Minor Leagues, Independent leagues, Little League… give your pitchers some support. They’d surely appreciate it. Us fans would surely appreciate it.
Until next time,
~Mimi

Uh sorry about that karaoke moment there but that song has been stuck in my head for a long time. I heard it somewhere and I thought I could get it out by writing it down. Anyways! The title was supposed to be:

The Player Spotlight: Howard Kendrick

kendrickfamily.jpgWhat I love about the Angels is the strength of their farm system and who better to show that than our second baseman Howard Kendrick!
Howard is having a good year. In fact he’s hitting .269 with 6 hr and 43 RBI’s. I’m proud to have him on the team because of his amiable character and great work ethic. It’s great to see him succeed in such a high level especially considering where he came from.

Born in Sarasota, FA, Kendrick grew up without a father and his mother was in the army so she wasn’t around much. He was basically raised by his grandmother (who passed away a couple of years ago) who taught him right from wrong and kept him out of the streets. After high school he had trouble finding a place to play so he tried out for a couple of Community Colleges until he finally met Tom Kotchman (scout for the Angels). Kendrick was drafted in the 10th round in the 2002 draft and made his major league debut in 2006.

He took the place of the fan favorite, Adam Kennedy (who, if anyone remembers hit 3 home runs in one game to beat the Twins in the ALCS in 2002) which was pretty overwhelming! He overcame his struggles in 2009 and is now an important part of the Angels’ success. Not to mention, he rightfully co-starred with Sosh in a couple of Howard’s TV and appliances commercials. He didn’t deserve that :( Those commercials are just awful!

He’s slowly becoming a fan favorite because of all the things he does for the community. He’s truly a role model on and off the field. I wish him the best of luck the rest of the year!

In other news,

I finally graduated :)

Home at last, home at last, god almighty we’re home at… Whaa?!!?

Guess what ladies and gents?

The Angels are back home again. Only for a short series against the Brew Crew and then they are off again. I truly don’t understand the schedule sometimes. It’s so grueling for the guys. I can only imagine. That’s a lot of sacrifice right there. Ballplayers go through a lot.
baseball-mlb30hats_c.gif
The Angels have now traveled more miles than any other team so far and will end up with the most miles covered in one season. That’s a LOT of traveling.
Despite the long road trip the Angels actually improved their record to 11-3 :) I guess they actually enjoyed playing on the road because they got beat silly by Ryan Braun & The Brew Crew tonight.
12-3 Brew Crew. Ouch. It’s disappointing because Joe Saunders had a great outing (complete game) last time up. Well we all have our days I suppose.
More bad news are these injuries we’ve been having.
Kendry Morales is out for the season.
Jason Bulger is on the DL with right shoulder problems
and more recently Erick Aybar our leadoff man and spectacular short stop got injured today. They say it might be hyperextension of his left leg.
It’ll be tragic if we lost Erick Aybar so I’m hoping this isn’t serious. He’s very important to our lineup and especially our D. It’s nice to see Erick out there too. Definitely a family favorite too.
Sorry for such a short blog post. It’s amazing to me how I’m graduating from high school in 5 days. I don’t know what to feel actually. As of right now I feel sad and a little bit nervous about leaving my family and friends and venturing out (even though it’s only an hour away from home) to a place i’m not familiar with and actually making something of myself. It’s fascinating to me. I should feel more excited rather than sad. I know this isn’t a “life” blog but just thought I’d share my feelings a bit.
Until then :)

A Hard Days Night (and those prom pictures I promised…..)

Hello there :)

It’s been a long road trip for the boys. In fact this is the longest road trip of the year for the Angels.
Starting From:
royals1.jpg
Kansas City (3-1): Kauffman Stadium is just beautiful. Not to mention the beast that is Greinke.
TO
safeco.jpg
Seattle (3-0): Safeco is really beautiful as well as Seattle. A very clean city!
TO

oakland.jpg
Oakland (2-2): They’ve been doing pretty well this season thus far :)
Now the last series before going home (quick home stand too. The Angels face the Brew Crew at home then they are off again to Wrigley. Who makes these schedules? Sounds pretty difficult if you ask me. Lots of jet lag too) is….
dodger-stadium12.jpg
LA Dodgers: We always play the Dodgers in interleague no matter what so it’s expected. It should be fun because the people really get into it as well as the players. Fun atmosphere! Unfortunately I’m still in school so I can’t attend any games this weekend. I’m bummed because I still haven’t gone to a single Angel game yet!
We had to extend the road trip because U2 was scheduled to play at Angels Stadium on the 6th of June. So thanks for the road wins U2! :)
u2.jpg
Can’t wait until the guys come back to Angels Stadium. There’s no place like home really. And the fans are waiting! :)
I’ve recently got some bad news about Kendry Morales. He is indeed to miss the rest of the season. That is probably the worst news the Angels could possibly get. Now we really need a first baseman to cover for the rest of the year. We’ve been hanging in there for quite a while with Mike Napoli and some rookies that do their part and leave to Triple A. This has me worried but I know that the farm system won’t let me down.
What Else is On?
1. Glee season one is over: I’m a Gleek. This is my favorite show. I’m head over heels obsessed with this show! My girlfriends and I even went to the Glee concert in May! I had a blast :) . I’ve never seen a show that made me so incredibly happy. Glee always made my week better. No matter what kind of day I was having it made sure I slept with a smile on my face. Now i’m waiting for September :(
glee1.jpg

2. Chicago Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup!: Congratulations! Very deserving :)
stanley.jpg

3. NBA Finals and my love for #20: Ray Allen is my favorite player in the game. I have a lot of players that I follow around the league but Ray (or as I like to call him Ray Ray) is a personal favorite. I don’t have a favorite team but I do enjoy basketball very much and playoffs in any sport is just a blast. So despite the fact that I live in Los Angeles and the fact that i’m surrounded by Laker Fans I am secretly rooting for Ray Allen :) .
ray allen.jpg
Well here’s some prom photos I promised :)
prom1.jpg
My friends and I before prom. I’m on the far left with the red dress. My aunt gave it to me! It was so glittery that my hands were all covered with red glitter afterwards!
prom2.jpgThis is me and my friend at the V2O club in Long Beach! We had a lot of fun :)
prom4.jpg
After prom ended at 11 pm, our community set up a “Prom Plus” aka an “after-prom” party so we had a safe place to go afterwards. We had it at the local gym. As you can see it was Alice in Wonderland themed. There was rock climbing, food, mechanical bull, games, fortune telling, etc etc! I came home at around 6 in the morning :)
So that is all for now!

Letter to Ken Griffey Jr

To one of the greatest players to ever play the game,

I sit here wondering how I could honor such an incredible person and still overcoming the fact that on June 2nd you have decided to retire. Maybe I could start from the beginning….
Ken “The Kid” Griffey Jr was Seattle’s first draft pick in 1987. During his years as a Mariner (1989-1999, 2009-2010) he became one of the most exciting and prolific players of the era racking up 1,752 hits, 398 home runs, 1,152 RBIs, and 167 stolen bases. He led the American League in home runs four seasons (1994, 1997, 1998, and 1999), was voted the A.L. MVP in 1997, and maintained a .297 batting average. And let’s not even start with his defense. This 10 time gold glove winner dazzled us all with his amazing catches and wide range. In 1990/1991, Griffey and Griffey Sr became the first father son duo to play on the same team. On September 14th the pair hit back to back home runs becoming the first father son duo to do so. He would soon go on to the Cincinnati Reds and the Chicago White Sox before he would go back to the Seattle Mariners once again.

griffey.jpg

Hall of Fame worthy? Well let’s see….

- 13 All star appearances
-1992 All star game MVP
-630 home runs, fifth (all-time)
-.907 OPS
-2,781 hits
-1,836 RBIs, 14th (all-time)
-10 time Gold Glove Award winner
-5,271 career bases, 12th (all-time)
-5,134 put outs in center field, fourth (all-time)
-7 time Silver Slugger award winner
-246 intentional walks, fourth (all-time)
-1997 AL MVP
-2005 NL Comeback player of the year
- 3 time Home Run Derby Winner

griffey2.jpg

Even with all that he has no World Series ring. I al
ways felt that it was a shame for Griffey to not have a ring. I can’t think of anyone who was more deserving of one. Although he has had his share of post season glory

There are a lot of things about “Junior” that we are going to remember. Like that sweet swing and amazing D. However there was a lot more to Griffey that explains why so many people respect him so much.

griffey3.jpg

When I think of Griffey I think of the backwards cap, the infectious, humble smile, the awesome commercials and a love/passion for the game. He truly loves the game and it just shows when he plays. I love how he is so energetic and loving towards fans, media and players alike. In an era of such controversy and negativity I believe that Ken Griffey Jr was the person who gave us a little hope. He played baseball the right way and he ends it the right way once again.  It’s unfortunate that I wasn’t able to see Junior in his glory days though I am a ’90s baby. But I am fortunate that I got to see him leave with such a great attitude. We need more people like Griffey in baseball. He is what makes baseball such a great game. I thank you (thank you! Thank you! THANK YOU!) Ken Griffey Jr for being so good for so long. What a tremendous career! 22 seasons, Wow! We will all miss you dearly!

With a sad heart, I bid thee farewell! See ya in Cooperstown :)

YEEEEEEEAAAAAHHHHH!!!!!!!NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

THE GOOD:

1. Prom 2010 was amazing :) : Our school really did a great job with our prom. They really worked hard so us seniors (and some underclassmen.. ’cause apparently underclassmen can go to a senior prom. I never understood that but whatever!) Our prom was held in the V2O club in Long Beach, CA. About 14 of my friends took a white limo and had a great time! The food was amazing (although I didn’t eat much of it because I was too busy dancing!) and the atmosphere was just great. I had a really memorable time. Prom ended around 11 PM and then our community threw us an after prom party at the local gym. There were games (rock climbing, mechanical bull, fortune telling, etc etc), food, all sorts of things! All free for us students! That ended around 5 AM and I had a blast :) PICTURES TO COME SOON!

2. Roy Halladay (aka my favorite player) threw a perfect game!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!: Geez louise Doc that was WAY overdue! ;) Yesterday, in front of some misplaced Phillies fans?, Roy Halladay threw 115 pitches (11 strikeouts) to no hit (and no walk) the Marlins (Josh Johnson only gave up 1 run) to become the 20th pitcher in baseball history to throw a perfect game (and the Phillies’ second pitcher to throw one as well). He was given the pitching rubber from the Marlins organization.I couldn’t be more happier for the guy! He’s the best in the game in my opinion and for him to celebrate like that feels good. He deserves it! He has always had perfect game stuff and he came close multiple times during his Toronto days. It’s just a joy for me to watch all 27 outs and seeing him (regularly a very stoic figure) so darn happy! Congratulations Mr Harry LeRoy Halladay. Thanks for being classy :)

THE BAD:

1. David Huff’s injury: Before I continue I would just like to say that David Huff is indeed okay. He was taken to a nearby hospital after the accident and tests came out negative. Alex Rodriguez hit a line drive that hit Indians’ pitcher David Huff square in the head. (Near the left ear). It was certainly a scary situation and possibly one that needs further investigation. Pitchers are very vulnerable once the ball is out of their hands. They don’t have any protection and are open to getting hit by a line drive especially near the head area. I read this article about a college student who got hit in the head twice. He is believed to be the only pitcher who has been hit by a line drive twice in his career. For people to bounce back and get on the mound again after that is just amazing. There have been quite a few students that have been seriously injured or killed by a line drive to the head and it’s incredibly unfortunate. Matt Hiserman (that’s his name) now wears a head protection pad under his cap to minimize the chance of injury. I don’t know what MLB is going to do about pitcher protection but it is food for thought.

2. Torii Hunter’s injury:  Torii Hunter got hit by a fastball on his left hand on Saturday and had to leave the game. He’s one of our offensive (and everything else) leaders and for us to lose him would be bad. Hopefully it’s not as bad as it looked/sounded.
THE UGLY:

1. OY VEY KENDRY MORALES!: I don’t know what to say. I’m speechless. I’ve never had such mixed emotions in a baseball game before.. Or I’ve never had emotions that took a 360 degree turn. It went from jubilation to confusion to disbelief to absolute devastation. For those who didn’t hear already: A Saturday afternoon game against the M’s soon went into extra innings. In the 10th the Angels loaded the bases with Kendry Morales (Angels’ leader in HR and RBIs, offensive juggernaut) at the plate. Morales hits a game winning (5-1 Angels win) grand slam. He runs the bases, turns around third, starts running happily to the crowd of teammates waiting to bounce on him and as he begins to jump into his teammates…… he slips and fractures his ankle. And the booming crowd and teammates suddenly goes dead quiet out of disbelief. We could go one way and talk about how it was ridiculous of players to celebrate as if the game was game 7 of the WS. And that celebrations like these are what cause freak accidents. True. Sosh said himself that this accident will definitely change the way they celebrate in the future. But I think the most important thing is Kendry Morales and his ankle. As of right now he is going to go into surgery, though it is delayed because of severe swelling. Docs are pretty optimistic that he won’t miss the entire season. It just hurts because he contributed the most offensively in the team and he was having an incredible all star season. Unfortunate that it had to happen that way. Now we have a hole at first that we have to take care of.

Sometimes things happen that remind me of why I love baseball and there are times where I just shake my head and think “only in baseball”. I guess that’s just the beauty of it. Now it’s almost time for me to graduate, almost time for Ray Allen and the Celtics & Pau Gasol and the Lakers (ugh this match up again… some people like the rivalry and some people ahem me just want a little bit of a change once in a while but it should be fun though) to square off and baseball to continue!
till then

My grandparents

Hello readers :)

It’s an off day today and the Angels are facing the M’s this (PROM! ladies if you’re interested i’m wearing a long red sparkly halter dress with some intricate flowery design. I’m so excited!) weekend so I just thought I’d squeeze a post in.
I put in my biography that my grandparents were the ones that taught me baseball and shared their love of the game to the family. I actually wrote a personal statement on my grandparents and how they taught me baseball. So, why not make a post about them?!
I’ve always been impressed with my grandparents and their knowledge of the game and almost every player. My grandparents are originally from South Korea and moved to Los Angeles. They told me they got interested in baseball because they couldn’t understand all the other shows on television. I’m proud to say that my grandparents are as knowledgeable as crazy baseball fans come. I love going to games with my family and they always have a great time :)
I still don’t know why we’re not Dodger fans but my grandparents say that they preferred the Angels. Oh well that’s just silly talk now :)
Speaking of silly talk it’s been 9.5 years of watching baseball with my grandparents. (I always watch the game with them. Sometimes diff family members join us it depends on the schedules). The different mannerisms when it comes to certain favoritisms or situations in the games are what makes watching games with them hilarious!
To give you a little taste……
Grandma:
1. My grandma’s favorite players are Ervin Santana and Erick Aybar: She usually makes her picks really quickly…. and early into the season. She loved Ervin probably from his 3rd or 4th start. She loved Aybar back when everyone hated him for being such a bad defensive shortstop. They proved a lot of people wrong as they are doing well (Aybar even being our starting short stop! I never would have thought that would happen!) today.

ervin&erick.jpg2. If Ervin and Jered are having bad starts it’s probably because they don’t eat enough meat: My grandma hates that i’m vegetarian. She doesn’t understand or care about the whole “care-about-the-animals” business that I am very adamant about. She also has this thing with food. She (like many grandmothers in this universe) will stuff you until you either die of a food coma. I live with her so I always have to tell her multiple times that i’m not hungry or i’m just too full! She thinks Ervin and Jered are too skinny which is why she wants them to eat more food because skinny-ness leads to bad starts. Ervin’s breaking ball is off, “he needs to eat more meat!”.. Jered’s throwing junk pitches “that’s what you get when you don’t eat enough meat”. I wonder what she thinks about Timmy Lincecum……

Tim-Lincecum.jpg3
. If the entire team is doing bad then they’re probably still trying to pass their hangover from last night: My grandma likes to think that all the guys drink on the road and that affects their bad play. So that is her reasoning every time Torii doesn’t hit in a key situation or when Matsui swings into a double play :D

homer.jpg4. She loves Joe Girardi:
Apparently she’s in love with Joe Girardi. She thinks he’s divine. In fact she loves how classy the Yankees look in their pinstripes. She likes the Yankees…. and loves Joe Girardi period.

joegirardi.jpg5. She hates when pitchers get 2 outs and start breaking down: Ervin gave up 6 runs after he got 2 outs once. I guess that somehow traumatized not just the entire family but my grandmother in particular. So whenever we are all jubilant about getting 2 outs (because there’s 2 less outs ya have to get! Right? :D ) she always mentions how Ervin gave up 6 runs with 2 outs. Anything can happen in baseball and grandma always reminds us of that.

ervin2.jpgGrandpa:

1. My grandpa could make a heckuva play by play announcer: I miss a couple games now and then and whenever I want to know what’s going on my grandpa fills me in. His memory is incredible. He knows exactly what happened. The count, the runners on base, etc. Fascinating! And he says it so magically with the same emotion he felt when it really happened. If only he spoke english… or if everyone else could understand korean.

vinscully.jpg2. Thinks Sosh puts too much trust in his players sometimes:
My grandpa has the highest respect for Mike “Sosh” Scioscia. However he has his days where he just doesn’t understand why Brian Fuentes is in the game after all he put us through. Sosh is a tough manager and a very good one but he’s not perfect of course. His moves are questionable sometimes but we couldn’t ask for a better manager!

Sosh.jpg3.
“We should have kept Figgy just for the sake of having a good defensive third baseman”: Oh how true is that statement!

figgy.jpg4. The 2001 World Series helped save his life: My grandpa had some medical problems that needed surgery. However he was at a point in his life where he didn’t want to do the procedure and just wanted to go peacefully. Of course (I was about 7 or 8 somewhere around there… I first got into baseball because of the 2001 WS) we were watching the post season and the epic D-backs Yankees match up. He got very excited watching these two teams play each other and I specifically remember seeing him very happy and us anticipating the ending. (Uhh we were cheering for Arizona :P ) As we lifted our arms up in happiness my grandpa decided that he was going to go into surgery and things have been great ever since! So okay maybe the 2001 WS has no direct correlation to him deciding to have surgery or the surgery making him all better but he did go into the hospital happy.

2001-world-series.jpg5.
He loves baseball: We all do. I do. My grandma does. My brother does. But my grandpa truly loves it and I thank him for giving me that love. We watch other games too. Sunday night baseball or a Dodger game. It’s fun and even when our team is losing it’s always a blast just watching it with him and hearing him complain about how things aren’t going the way they seem. He always comments on how I feel bad winning against a team that isn’t doing well. He says i’m too nice with things. Well i guess i am. I’m biased when it comes to certain players i like.

baseball.jpg Baseball really brings us altogether and it’s nice to spend time with people who’ve been their for you your entire life. I think that’s what I love most about baseball. Is that it’s not just a game but it’s something that brings people together and in the end that’s what it’s all about isn’t it? The people you enjoy games with are just as enjoyable as the game itself. I thank baseball for always being there much like my grandparents. This lovely game is something that we all love and that’s one of the things that we share with each other. It’s a beautiful thing :)
Going off to college is pretty scary for me. I’ve been with my close knit family my entire life. Although it is liberating it’s also very… I don’t know scary I suppose. I’m going to California Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA which is an hour away from home. I’m glad it’s close enough but not too far so I can come back on weekends. My grandparents are getting worried and I know they’ll miss me (feelings are mutual!) but I know that i’ll have their support even from far away. I thank them for everything really. Just everything :)
Have a wonderful memorial weekend and please remember our veterans!

bless our troops!.jpgGo Angels!
